1st of January—the day I always tell myself, This will be the year I finally get rid of anxiety once and for all. No more dizzy feeling, no more cancelling plans because I can’t face going out, no more spending hours deep-breathing just to find some calm.
But, if I’m being honest, this resolution feels like it’s already heading straight for the graveyard where all my lose weight, be more productive resolutions went to die.
I think there are two big reasons for this.
One (and the main one): most resolutions are completely unachievable and totally unrealistic. Weight loss? Looking at you!
The second reason is they’re always too vague, focusing on results instead of behavior changes. It’s easy to say, I will become anxiety-free (or I’ll lose weight or I’ll finally sort my life out), but that just sets you up to fail. Why? Because you’re not tracking what you’re actually doing—just some distant, perfect outcome.
Whereas if you set a goal like, I will leave the house every day, it’s much more direct. It doesn’t mean I won’t feel anxious; it just means I’ll leave the house anyway. It’s about focusing on things I can control.
So, here they are—my new year resolutions for this year:
- Read more. At least one book a month.
- Cook more from scratch. At least one meal a day.
- Go outside. Every single day.
That’s it. Happy New Year, everyone.
